ABOUT
Portrait by Alex Bramell
I was fortunate to grow up surrounded by a wonderful original art collection in my parents’ home in Perthshire, Scotland. It wasn’t until my young family and I moved to Somerset, however, that I first picked up a paintbrush with real intent. After many years working in London as a buyer in the wine trade, I had no formal art training and no expectation that fine art painting would become such a central part of my life.
The long months of Covid played a significant role in my re-introduction to painting. I spent countless hours experimenting with different mediums and subjects, quickly discovering a deep affinity with oil paint. I’m drawn to its slow-drying nature, which allows time to blend, layer, and respond to the texture of the paint as the work evolves.
Most of my paintings are created ‘alla prima’, in a single sitting. This approach encourages a loose, energetic style and helps resist the ever-present temptation to overwork a piece.
I’m particularly drawn to still life, using colour and tonal relationships to bring everyday objects to life, finding beauty and presence in the familiar.
I frame all my own work, which gives me the freedom to explore finishes that best complement each painting. These are often hand-painted or metal-gilded frames. Framing is frequently underestimated, yet I believe it plays a vital role in the final feel of a piece, offering both balance and intention to the work as a whole.
